How the assessment works

This is not an evaluative summary or a list of suggestions. It is a considered analysis of how the work functions as a whole, structurally, thematically, and stylistically – and whether its execution supports its ambitions.

Assessment Framework

Each manuscript assessment follows a structured evaluation framework.

Rather than relying on informal impressions, the manuscript is examined across several core elements of writing craft.

Observations are drawn directly from the submitted material and presented in a written assessment report. The purpose of this framework is to ensure that feedback remains focused, consistent, and grounded in the work itself rather than personal preference.

The goal of the assessment is not to prescribe changes or rewrite the manuscript, but to provide a clear professional perspective on how the work currently functions on the page.

The Assessment Process.

Assessment Methodology

Assessments typically consider:

• narrative structure and pacing
• character development and psychological coherence
• thematic clarity and consistency
• stylistic control and narrative voice
• genre alignment and reader expectations

This framework exists to ensure that every assessment remains focused on how the manuscript functions as a piece of written work. Observations are grounded in the material itself and presented within a consistent analytical structure.

Professional Assessment Standards

Every manuscript assessment conducted by Obsidian Lily follows a defined analytical framework that ensures consistency and analytical standards across all manuscripts.

The assessment is based on careful reading, recorded observations, and professional judgement applied to the manuscript as a complete work.

While the evaluation considers core elements of writing craft, the assessor’s final report reflects structured analysis of how those elements function together within the manuscript.

Assessment Report

Each assessment concludes with a structured written report presenting the key observations identified during evaluation.

The report focuses on how the manuscript currently functions as a complete work, outlining strengths, limitations, and areas where elements of craft or execution may require further development.

The document is delivered in professional format and is intended to provide a clear, independent perspective on the manuscript at the time it is reviewed.

Assessment Process

Once a manuscript is submitted, it enters a structured assessment workflow.

The material is first reviewed to confirm that it falls within the scope of the service and that the submission is suitable for assessment. This ensures that the analysis provided will be meaningful and appropriate for the stage of the manuscript.

The manuscript is then read in full and evaluated using the assessment framework outlined above.

Observations are drawn directly from the submitted material and recorded during the evaluation process.
