Many writers seek manuscript feedback hoping for clarity, only to receive feedback that is either too general to be actionable or so intervention-heavy that it risks overshadowing the author’s own creative intentions.

While subjectivity will always play a role in evaluating creative work, the absence of a clear and consistent assessment framework can make it difficult for writers to identify their manuscript’s strengths, weaknesses, and development priorities with confidence.

Obsidian Lily was established in January 2026 to address this gap, following a period of development focused on designing and refining the analytical methodology, assessment rubric, and reporting processes that underpin every evaluation.

The aim was to create a more consistent and transparent assessment experience while still recognizing the individual nature of creative work. Rather than relying solely on intuition or impression-based critique, each manuscript is examined through a defined analytical framework designed to promote consistency, clarity, and accountability.

Today, every manuscript is assessed through this framework to support clear, repeatable, and evidence-based feedback for authors seeking a deeper understanding of their work.

Professional Boundaries

The service is limited to assessment.

It does not include line editing, rewriting, or developmental collaboration. It does not provide writing instruction, iterative feedback, or ongoing editorial support.

The purpose of the assessment is to clarify how the manuscript functions in its current state. It does not attempt to improve the work directly or guide revision in a step-by-step manner.

No outcome is guaranteed. The assessment does not provide validation, predict publication prospects, or confer any form of industry endorsement. It represents an informed, independent evaluation of the submitted material.

Author Ownership and Confidentiality

All submitted manuscripts remain the intellectual property of the author.

Material is used solely for the purpose of assessment and is not retained beyond what is necessary to complete the service, except where required for administrative or legal reasons.

Where software tools are used to support structural review or document analysis, they are selected on the basis that they do not claim ownership of submitted material or use such material for model training.

All interpretive analysis and evaluative judgment is provided solely by a human assessor.

Analytical Method

Each assessment follows a structured evaluation framework.

The manuscript is examined as a complete work, with attention to narrative structure, pacing, character development, dialogue, internal consistency, and clarity of prose. Consideration is also given to how effectively the work aligns with its stated or implied genre and intentions.

Observations are drawn directly from the submitted material and presented in a written report. The assessment does not prescribe changes or rewrite passages, but identifies where the work is functioning effectively and where its execution may limit its intended impact.

The objective is to provide a clear, consistent, and grounded perspective on the manuscript as it currently stands.
